Terminal 1 Milan Malpensa Airport

WORK DETAILS

ASACERT carried out the technical control service during construction relating to the completion works of the internal civil finishing works of the Terminal 1 3rd/3rd passenger terminal of the Milan Malpensa intercontinental airport.

Milan Malpensa is the second Italian airport for passenger traffic and the first for cargo traffic and thanks to its vast offer of flight destinations around the world it also represents the main airport in northern Italy. The airport is located in the province of Varese and boasts a long history that dates back to the airfield installed at the Cascina Malpensa in Somma Lombardo in 1909 and continues to the present day.

Today Milan Malpensa Airport consists of three main stopping points: Terminal 1, dedicated to business and leisure flights on national, international and intercontinental routes, Terminal 2 reserved for low-cost traffic and Terminal 3 – also known as CargoCity – intended for large-scale transportation of goods.

SERVICE

Itinera S.p.a. – a leading company in the construction of large infrastructure and civil construction projects – has entrusted ASACERT with the task of carrying out technical control activities during construction for the construction of the internal civil finishing works of Terminal 1 3°/3 ° of Milan Malpensa Airport, aimed at issuing a ten-year posthumous compensation policy.

The technical control service offered by ASACERT was aimed at verifying the stability and mechanical resistance of the structural elements, aimed at preventing the collapse of the structure or the onset of serious construction defects. The object of the verification was the structural expansion, renovation and completion works which affect a large part of the existing terminal (the interiors and part of the exteriors of the main body of the terminal, the interiors of the North satellite with its connection to the main body , the renovation of the Central Satellite and the doubling of the existing connection with the airport). The total amount awarded for the works is equal to €38,933,000.00.

The control activity took place in parallel with the design and construction phases of the works and involved the completion of the following aspects:

  • Project verification: ASACERT carried out a sample survey of the dimensions relating to the various elements considered critical, verifying their compliance with the requirements of the mandatory legislation and the specifications of good design practice;
  • Control during execution of the works: checks were carried out aimed at verifying the conformity of the works with the design requirements, the adequacy of the materials used and compliance with the rules of good executive practice;
  • Drafting of the Final Report: at the conclusion of the inspection activities, ASACERT drafted the Final Report which summarizes the results of all the checks carried out both on the project and during the execution of the works, in relation to the stability and mechanical resistance of the structural elements.

RESULT

At the end of the technical control service during construction, carried out by the multidisciplinary team made up of qualified and expert resources in the technical control sector, ASACERT was able to detect the substantial compliance of the construction of the works with the project, with the current regulatory framework and with the rule of art.
