Palermo - Catania Railway Line
DETAILS OF THE WORK
S. AGATA FS S.c.a.r.l. has entrusted ASACERT with the task of carrying out the activity of Technical Control in Progress in relation to the works for the doubling of the Palermo – Catania railway line, in the Bicocca – Catenanuova section, including railway armament, interventions on the IS, Telecommunications, Light and Motive Power, Contact Line, S.S.E., Mechanical Installations, interventions on the Sferro, Motta S. Anastasia and Bicocca plants, included in the scope of the interventions under Decree Law 133/2014 converted into Law 164 / 2014 (so-called “Sblocca Italia”).
The works consist of the construction of the Doubling of the Palermo – Catania Railway Line, in the above-mentioned section, for a total development of about 38 km between the Bicocca station (included) and Catenanuova (excluded) as a variant between the project progressives km o+500 (coinciding with km 196+535 of the LS) and straddles the provinces of Enna and Catania crossing the municipalities Catenanuova, Centuripe, Paternò, Belpasso, Motta S. Anastasia and Catania.
The post-operam scenario includes the following service locations:
- Stations: Catenanuova, Catania Bicocca
- Movement Post: Motta S. Anastasia
- Communication Post: Sferro
The current stops at Gerbini, Portiere Stella and S. Martino Piana are discontinued.
The project involves the doubling of the line between Bicocca station (included) and Catenanuova (excluded), to be built alongside the existing single track, in some sections, by constructing a new double track as a variant with the aim of allowing a recovery of travel time and an improvement in commercial offerings.
The intervention also includes two subsequent macro phases:
- Commissioning of the new odd-numbered track with the help of a temporary signaling system.
- Completion work of the doubling with the construction of the new even track, the commissioning of which is subject to the completion of the doubling works planned along the Catenanuova – Raddusa section and the realization of the new Signaling system on the entire Bicocca – Raddusa section both of which are not the subject of this contract.

- Soil/Geotechnics;
- Hydraulic accommodations;
- Major works of art: Bridges and viaducts;
- Major works of art: Artificial galleries;
- Minor works of art;
- Reinforced concrete and prefabricated walls;
- Provisional works;
- Movement of matter – rail and road body (new roadways);
- Rail (armament) and road (new roads) superstructure;
- Electrical and mechanical systems.
SERVICE
The in-process technical inspection performed by ASACERT’s Inspection Team will aim to verify the requirements stability and mechanical strength of structural elements, including embankments, understood as the prevention of total or partial ruin of the work and of serious construction defects, with reference to parts of the work intended by their nature to be long-lasting, provided that they result from defect in construction or error in the executive design.
In addition, the inspections will concern the durability, maintainability, useful life of waterproofing of the following categories of Works:
- 2 box tunnels
- Viaducts with embedded girder deck
- Line buildings
- Railroad Rider
- Road viaducts
- Hydraulic manholes along the line
Upon completion of the inspections, appropriate Final Reports will be prepared for the portion of the work analyzed, summarizing the work done by the Inspection Team and the results obtained.
