Nonverbal communication
DESCRIPTION
“It doesn’t matter what you say, but how you say it.”
In the late 1960s, Prof. Albert Mehrabian, a U.S. psychologist, conducted interesting research on the importance of different aspects of communication in getting a particular message across. The result appeared in all its disruptiveness: nonverbal communication (particularly that related to body and facial expressions) has an influence of 55%, paraverbal communication (tone, volume, rhythm of voice, etc.) influences 38%, words, verbal content, count for only 7%.
Nonverbal communication can be considered an expression of our emotional matrix, that part of communication that includes all aspects of a communicative exchange that do not concern the purely semantic level of the message, but is expressed through body language, that is, unspoken communication between people. The fact that we can communicate even without speaking fascinates our imagination and curiosity. “Communication” is a dynamic, circular interchange, a sending and receiving of information, thoughts, attitudes, a sharing and construction of meanings, it is “pooling” something. Thus, “nonverbal communication” could be defined as a transmission of content, construction and sharing of meaning that occurs regardless of the use of words. The nonverbal component of communication, in fact, includes all aspects of messages other than words. In fact, Greene (1980) prefers to use the distinction between “communication that makes use of words” and “communication that does not,” rather than verbal and nonverbal. It therefore often happens that our interlocutor’s body language belies his words, revealing his true thoughts, emotions and intentions, which are not always aligned with what he is saying. But we do not notice it, because we are no longer used to recognizing it.
When our body language is inconsistent with our words, a feeling of distrust is generated in our interlocutor. So here are the misunderstandings, the misinterpretations, the frustration we feel when we fail to be convincing or persuasive with our listeners, the disappointment we feel when we perceive that our message has not been understood.
Understanding and awareness of this knowledge is crucial to improving the quality of one’s private and professional life.
