AWARENESS OF ONE’S INTELLIGENCES TO ENHANCE THEIR EFFECTS
Intelligence is one of the most studied and debated human constructs and characteristics in the scientific community. It is defined as the “ability to understand the world in which we live and to solve environmental and socio-cultural problems that are posed to us at every moment of our lives.”
Until the first half of the 20th century, it was a widespread belief in academic circles that intelligence was identifiable with a common and measurable ability in all individuals, even through rigid tests of scientific and absolute value, based on the belief that there was only one type of intelligence, unique and the same for all that allowed access and connections between different realities and stimuli.
However, in 1983 U.S. psychologist Howard Gardner developed a theory embracing the concept of multiple intelligences, or seven different types of intelligence, more detailed and specific than those identified earlier. Years later he identified two more types, bringing the number to nine. Theory of Multiple Intelligences Gardner in his book “Frames of the Mind. The Theory of Multiple Intelligences” defines the existence of different forms of intelligence, one independent of the other. They are all present in every individual, but developed at different levels. Different development, defines, then, the greater predisposition toward one characteristic, as opposed to another, a way of approaching reality, learning, and defining interests and abilities. Each intelligence has specific characteristics, ways of manifesting itself, and can be trained and enriched over time. Humans may well have all nine intelligence profiles, but, in reality, each individual is characterized by his or her own particular “blend” among various abilities.
In working life and interpersonal relationships, the intelligences that most find application, too often unknowingly, are:
- Linguistic Intelligence: concerns the linguistic and verbal area, with skills with respect to the use of vocabulary, syntax and semantics
- Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: area of number, logical-deductive reasoning and processing of abstract concepts and use of symbols
- Visual-spatial intelligence: intelligence related to the perception, organization and structuring of shapes and objects in space
- Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: coordination, motor skills, skills in using fine manual dexterity and the body in making objects, actions and occupations
- Interpersonal intelligence: ability to understand others’ experiences and feelings and enter into relationships
- Intrapersonal intelligence: ability to get in touch with and understand one’s internal states
- Naturalistic Intelligence: involves contact with and knowledge of nature
- Existential Intelligence: ability to reflectively question existential issues
The world is changing rapidly, and in the 4.0 era we cannot miss the opportunity to develop our potential as much as possible.
